(above- me and my mum in 2009)
Later this month, my family and I are going to be climbing the 4,095m Mount Kinabalu, on the island of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Mount Kinabalu is the 20th most prominent mountain in the world.
Last year my mum was diagnosed with cancer. It has affected not only me, but also my family so much. It messed me up- seeing my mum so ill, naturally preparing myself for the worst. I found it so hard to cope with what was happening not only during, but also after the treatment was over and although she tried to hide it from us, she wasn’t coping well either.
The help that Hellen Rollason has given to my mum has been amazing. During the time when she was having to cope with the side effects of the drugs she’s had to take, to keep the cancer at bay, they provided alternative therapies like reflexology and massage, counselling and organised a lovely package full of wonderful cosmetics for people who’ve been affected by cancer, and believe me, with some being on anti-depressants, this is what they need. Without Hellen Rollason, my mum wouldn’t have had these days where she was able to just lie back and relax, to be away from it all and spend time with other women who have been through the same things as her.
We would like to be sponsored to climb this mountain and so far we have raised over £1,100. It would mean so much if you were to sponsor us, as little or as much as you’d like, and help out families like us who have been greatly affected by cancer.

“The NHS was there in the emergency, but Helen Rollason has been there for me and my mental well-being, which over-spills into family and work life. It is a place of sanctuary. A place where you can laugh and cry in the same minute. A place where you can have time out from the realities. A place for alternative therapies and counselling. A place to meet others who’ve been “there” too.”
We aim to reach the peak at sunrise having started at 9am the day before. I will be filming a travel vlog while I’m away, recording our experiences to also share with you all, which you’ll be able to watch on my channel - Sophie-Anne Y - when we get back.
